Dominican Republic Real Estate - Affordable Caribbean Retirement for America’s Baby Boomers
Recently, Donald Trump made waves in the Dominican Republic, when he sold a record $300 MILLION worth of real estate at his Cap Cana/Trump Farallon Caribbean project. Consider it the dawning of a new age for the DR. Although there are still plenty of great real estate bargains available here, prices are set to sky rocket, especially in the
Bavaro/Punta Cana area on the East Coast, where the Donald, along with Bill and Hillary Clinton, Julio Iglesias, Oscar de la Renta, and various other movers and shakers are digging in their heels.
Another area that is undergoing a resurrection, and subsequent real estate boom, is Juan Dolio (my town). During the recent Christmas holidays, the beaches underwent a multi-million dollar overhaul, with thousands of pounds of white powder sand being pumped in to expand our beaches almost 3-times what they were. Rock walls were taken down, the beach was thoroughly cleaned, raked, and generally revitalized, leaving us with a world class beach in a few days time. It was quite magical, and I’m so grateful to have been here to watch the transformation.
As a result, real estate prices doubled, and tall condominiums, apartment buildings and new resorts are going up left to right. It is quite amazing to see the development that has taken place over th past two years since I first discovered this place. What was once a run-down, rather seedy little town is developing into a paradise in every sense of the word.
The Dominican Republic is set to become the retirement Mecca for America’s baby boomers…so close to the states yet so livable (only 2 1/2 hour flight from Miami, 3 hr 15 min from NYC), friendly, affordable and jaw-droppingly gorgeous.
Even though former US presidents have discovered the DR as well as
quite a few Hollywood stars, there are still plenty of real estate bargains available…including beach front houses and lots that sell for about 1/4 the price of their American counterparts.
While the majority of Dominicans speak only Spanish, areas such as Juan Dolio, Punta Cana, Bavaro, La Romana and other resort destinations are home to people who speak several languages including English, French, German and Italian.
Imagine, a brand new 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom beach house built to your specifications for $200,000 or less! It’s a reality here in the Dominican Republic. Not to mention that you can live the life of a king on an income of about $1,800 per month for a family of 3-4 people. Oh, did I mention that includes a full-time housekeeper? Additionally, with the recent implementation of DR-CAFTA (Dominican Republic-Central American Free Trade Agreement), prices on many American imports to the DR are set to drop dramatically. For those who are interested in starting businesses in the DR, there has been no time more favorable.
