Runescape Teaching Our Kids How to Be Successful in Business
Runescape, the gigantic online game where players interact with eachother real time, is set during the times of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. That was encouraging enough for me to allow my 11-year-old to become a member. While it has formed into somewhat of an obsession with him (now I’m working late nights so he can use the computer to get his “Runescaping” in), I have come to see that this game is invaluable to his future in the world of business.
Rather than focusing on crime, brutal bloody murders and other forms of moral disintegration like the games X-Box has to offer, Runescape is teaching my son the ins and outs of being a merchant…and how unethical behavior will negatively impact his fortunes creation in the long run. He asks me for advice every once in a while, but for the most part I leave him to make his own decisions and learn from the consequences thereof.
The game, while it does have some mild violence, really focuses on collecting precious weaponry and garments as well as building your own house, forming a network of friends and supporters, helping others out when they are in a jam, and my favorite theme…buying low and selling high.
The game has a membership into the millions worldwide, and I think it is fantastic that my son is learning the power of a global economy, as well as learning how to communicate and do business with people of other cultures.
I’m only a little bit jealous that I didn’t have Runescape, or something like it, when I was growing up. But my heart swells with pride when my son yells to me, “Mamma! Remember that obsidian cape I bought for $35,000? I just sold it for $420K! I just hope his skills follow him into adulthood…as well as his enthusiasm for business well-conducted and money honestly earned. My little capitalist
